Everybody is voting in the Super Bowl halftime performance poll

By Jeffrey Williams ‘20

Last Super Bowls (Super Bowl 50’s) halftime show was really a spectacular show. Featuring many artists such as Coldplay, Mark Ronson, Bruno Mars, Beyoncé, Dance Battle, Fix Your Montage, and Joyous Finale, it will be hard to top. This year, however, they are creating a poll to let us choose who we want to perform at the Super Bowl in 2017. I believe that by doing so, they are giving the majority of the people exactly what they want. They are offering many genres such as pop, rock, country, indie pop, dance rock, soul, alternative, contemporary, hip hop, electro-pop, Spanish pop, R&B, funk, country, southern rock, and reggae, along with over 15 acts. Those acts compose of Taylor Swift, Walk the Moon, Adele, Kanye West, Calvin Harris, Shakira, Janet Jackson, Nicki Minaj, Justin Bieber, Pharrell Williams, Maroon 5, Luke Bryan, Panic At The Disco, Alabama Shakes, Lady Gaga, One Direction, and Rihanna. You are able to vote as many times as you want for any of those artists, and the percentage of votes ranges widely. There are a total of just over one million votes as of right now, and votes are still coming in. Though the race is not over, and votes are still being tallied, this is only a competition of two acts with those two acts blowing all the others out of the water. Those acts are pop rock group Panic! At the Disco, and pop England boy band One Direction. Out of the 17 acts nominated, those two are the only two with over five percent of the votes. Currently, One Direction has a slight lead over Panic! At the Disco. Panic! At the Disco has 41.04 percent of the votes, with currently 489,788 votes. One Direction, however, has 41.76 of the votes, with 498,294 votes. The other 15 nominated acts take up the other 17.2 percent. I was surprised to hear that rap superstar Kanye West had only 0.68 percent of the votes, having only currently 8,099 votes, lower than Latin artist Shakira (1.36 percent/16,189 votes), pop country singer Taylor swift (1.62 percent/19,291 votes), rap R&B singer Nick Minaj (0.81 percent/9,657 votes), singer Justin Bieber (4.12 percent/49,128 votes), pop group Maroon 5 (0.81 percent/9,634 votes), Lady Gaga (3.46 percent/ 41,266 votes), and Rihanna (1.97 percent/23,541 votes).I was surprised to see that Panic! was nominated for a Super Bowl Halftime performance, considering they are a rock and pop band. Rock groups usually don’t get nominated for sports shows so it was a surprise. I am hoping they end up winning the voting and play. If they do, I would probably get tickets and go, but we’ll have to wait and see.
