West Deptford High School, sophomore, Ray Parsons is a star runner year round and an awesome student. Parson is on both the Cross Country Team and the Winter Track Team.

Parsons has been doing track and cross country since he was in seventh grade. Since then, he has competed in invitational meets, championship races, weekend varsity races, and sectionals for South Jersey Group II.

He was one of the only freshmen to compete at Cross Country sectionals, Winter Track sectionals, and Spring Track sectionals. Normally, that doesn’t happen, but Parson’s hard work has paid off.

“I know most people hate running, but my perspective is different. I enjoy the great competition in the Colonial Conference, Gloucester County, South Jersey Group II, and against outer state schools,” said Parsons.

Parson is currently on the West Deptford High School Boys’ Cross Country Team and will later be on the Winter Track and Boys’ Spring Track Team. Parsons enjoys long distance running better because his body isn’t right for sprints.

His teammates, family, and coaches have helped him become what he is today. Practices depend on the kind of workout or run that is planned for that day, so there is no set time for his workouts.

“Coach Drummond makes us do the Hundred Hill, a steep hill in Woodbury. Coach Campbell makes us do the 200 meters hard and then a 200-meter jog to recover,” said Parsons.

Parsons has won at least twenty medals, Second Team All Conference Liberty Division freshmen year, and the 2010 MVP for cross country. His biggest record so far is the school record at West Deptford Park with at time of 17:54. Parson also nailed a school record at Pennypacker Park with at time of 16:11 placing 7th and earning First Team All-Conference.  Another achievement he earned this year was becoming the sophomore champion at the Frosh/Soph Race at Gloucester County College.

“Practicing to become good isn’t easy, not even for me. You just have to listen to your coach, do what he says, and push yourself to the extreme in workouts or anything else no matter what it is,” said Parsons.

His future aspirations are to break his current school records that he holds: West Deptford’s 5k course record and the indoor track boys 1500 and 3000 meter run.

“My greatest future aspiration would be to become the best distance runner in WDHS’s history,” said Parsons.
