On December 3, 2011West Deptfordand our most competitive rivals met at Rowan to battle for the title of being Group II State Champions. The odds were not in our favor, but the Eagles played their game and came out with a win with a score of 22-14. Giving it their all, they were hungry with the thought of revenge.

West Deptford has won its fifth Group II title in the last 10 years and first since 2007! Some key players that had played in the winning game were GeraldTowns(10th), Jake Hannan (12th), Jamil Pollard (12th), Tom Jakubowski (12th), Todd Jarrell (12th), Josh Cornelius (11th), and Phil Fisher (12th). “We had to give it all we got. There was no tomorrow. We knew that it was not going to be easy and we knew that if we wanted to win, we couldn’t give up. It felt amazing to win,” said Towns.

The past three years Haddonfield has been West Deptford football’s back and forth rivals. Previously, West Deptford has been dominant. This win was different, however, because Haddonfield is a local power who has been creeping up on the Eagles. They were undefeated and ranked 4th in the state. West Deptford showed them up and took away their 20-game winning streak. That was the Bulldawgs first unbeaten season since 1964.

Preparing for this game you would think put the team under a lot of stress, but Coach Clyde Folsom kept them cool and collected. “We kept our team loose and confident throughout the week. We never talked about winning or losing. Our focus was on being physical,” said Folsom.

Celebrating is always a fun thing to do after a winning game. The Eagles celebrated their victory by the whole team, including coaches, meeting in the locker room and reflecting back on the week as well as the game. “We were excited, proud and happy for the community and student body,” said Folsom.
